I’ve come across sites recently where the information store process on an SBS 2011 box tends to take most of the available memory. In normal circumstances Exchange 2010 is designed to use as much memory as possible for performance optimization. As long as Exchnage 2010 is running on it’s own, there’s no problem with that. The issues can arise in SBS environment, where there is SQL 2008 R2 installed alongside Exchnage 2010 and SQL has similar optimization built in. As a result the performance of the system could degrade by time and requires restart of Exchange/SQL services or rebooting the whole system.

To avoid this problem, you can limit the amount of memory Exchange is using. Start by opening ADSIedit – either click Start ->ADSIedit.msc, or navigate to Start -> All Programs -> Administrative Tools -> ADSI Edit.

Right click the root of the tree view on the left and select Connect To. . . On the Connection Settings screen select the Select a well known Naming Context option and from the drop down list choose the Configuration option.

ADSI Edit -> Connect To

Once connected to the Configuration Naming Context, navigate to the following item:

Configuration -> Services -> Microsoft Exchange -> ”Organization Name” -> Administrative Groups > ”Administrative Group” -> Servers -> ”Server Name” -> InformationStore

Right click Information Store and scroll down to msExchESEParamCacheSizeMax attribute and set the value according to your requirements.

ADSI Edit -> Information Store Settings

Please note that Exchange 2007 works with 8kB pages and Exchnage 2010 works with 32kB pages. So if you want to limit the size of memory used to 4GB, you will need the following calculations:

Exchange 2007: 4 GB = 4.194.304 KB / 8 KB => 524288

Exchange 2010: 4 GB = 4.194.304 KB / 32 KB => 131072

If you have confirmed you have the correct numbers, you can click OK to save the settings and restart Microsoft Exchange Information Store service for the changes to take effect.

UPDATE: As it turns out, setting the msExchESEParamCacheSizeMax size only doesn’t seem to be sufficient. The limit has been actually applied only when the msExchESEParamCacheSizeMin size was set as well. In our example the values would be set as follows:

Exchange 2010:

Min – 1GB: msExchESEParamCacheSizeMin = 32768

Max – 4GB: msExchESEParamCacheSizeMax = 131072

Exchange 2007:

Min – 1GB: msExchESEParamCacheSizeMin = 131072

Max – 4GB: msExchESEParamCacheSizeMax = 524288

I came across this Apple technical note this morning, which describes how to flush the DNS cache on your Mac. I ran into this after the standard “sudo dscacheutil -flushcache” appeared to have stopped working in Lion and Mountain Lion.

As a reminder, to flush the DNS cache in Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6, run this command in Terminal:

sudo dscacheutil -flushcache

To do the same in 10.7 and 10.8, run this command:

sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

As Apple points out, you might need to do this in the following situation:

“OS X keeps a local cache of resolved DNS queries for a time defined by the DNS server, but sometimes it may be necessary to reset the cache immediately and re-query a DNS server. For example, you might do this after an entry on the server is changed or a new entry is added.”

If you are experiencing the same, use the following fix. The server I’m running is ESXi 4.1.0-800380 (which is the RTM of ESXi 4.1 Update 3). To get the mouse choppiness to stop, open up Device Manager and select the display adapter. Update the driver and manually choose the location of the driver (which is located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\VMware\Drivers\video). After selecting that location and clicking “Next”, it will automatically find the proper driver (VMware SVGA II) and install it, and after a reboot, the mouse choppiness was fixed. You may need to enable hardware acceleration for the adapter, so if you update the driver and are still having issues, ensure you’ve enabled hardware acceleration. (“Troubleshoot” tab in the video adapter’s Advanced Settings option.) I’m also running the latest version of VMware Tools on this machine, so if this directory doesn’t exist, or this doesn’t work for you, make sure VMware Tools are up to date. Voilà!

One of the very annoying changes in OS X Mountain Lion was the change of the default save location to iCloud. If an app is “iCloud aware” then it now displays its save dialog box differently than the others. Because of this, instead of seeing your file system such as your “Documents” or “Pictures” folder on your computer, you are presented with “Save to iCloud”.

Thanks to some Terminal commands, however, you can revert this behavior back to its pre-Mountain Lion state.

1) Open Terminal.app which can be found in the “Utilities” folder within the “Applications” folder.

2) At the prompt, enter (or copy and paste) the following command:

defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSDocumentSaveNewDocumentsToCloud -bool false

If you would like to revert the change back to its stock “Save to iCloud” ways, you can enter or copy and paste the same changing the ending “false” to “true”

defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSDocumentSaveNewDocumentsToCloud -bool true

The Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter (MVMC) Solution Accelerator is a Microsoft-supported, stand-alone solution for the IT pro or solution provider who wants to convert VMware-based virtual machines and disks to Hyper-V®-based virtual machines and disks.

The Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter (MVMC) Solution Accelerator is a Microsoft-supported, stand-alone solution for the IT pro or solution provider who wants to convert VMware-based virtual machines and disks to Hyper-V®-based virtual machines and disks.
MVMC provides the following features:

Converts and deploys virtual machines from VMware hosts to Hyper-V hosts including Hyper-V on Windows Server® 2012. As part of the machine conversion MVMC converts the virtual disks attached to the source virtual machine. It also migrates configuration such as memory, virtual processor and so on from the source virtual machine to the converted virtual machine deployed on Hyper-V. It adds virtual network interface cards (NICs) to the converted virtual machine on Hyper-V.

Converts VMware virtual disks to Hyper-V based virtual hard disks (VHDs).

Supports conversion of virtual machines from VMware vSphere 4.1 and 5.0 hosts to Hyper-V.

Note MVMC also supports conversion of virtual machines from VMware vSphere 4.0 if the host is managed by vCenter 4.1 or vCenter 5.0. You have to connect to vCenter 4.1 or 5.0 through MVMC to convert virtual machines on vSphere 4.0.

Offers fully scriptable command-line interfaces for performing virtual machine and disk conversions that integrates well with data center automation workflows and Windows PowerShell scripts.

Has a wizard-driven GUI, making it simple to perform virtual machine conversion.

Uninstalls VMware tools prior to conversion to provide a clean way to migrate VMware-based virtual machines to Hyper-V.

Supports Windows Server guest operating system conversion, including Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003 SP2.

Enables conversion of Windows® client versions including Windows 7.

Installs integration services on the converted virtual machine if the guest operating system is Windows Server 2003 SP2.
